✨ Black History Month Spotlight ✨
This February, Superior Historic Properties is proud to honor William Hazel (1854–1929) — a remarkable artist, educator, and civil rights advocate whose legacy may be closer to home than you think.
Born in North Carolina, Hazel went on to become a renowned stained glass artist. As an adult, he moved to the Twin Cities and worked as a representative for the Tiffany Company until 1890. He is credited with creating the stunning stained glass windows aboard the SS Christopher Columbus, a passenger whaleback ship built right here in Superior and designed by Alexander McDougall.
We also have reason to believe that Hazel may have helped design some — or perhaps all — of the stained glass windows at Fairlawn Mansion, connecting his extraordinary artistry directly to our historic site.
Beyond his artistic achievements, Hazel was a fierce advocate for civil rights. He served on faculty at the Tuskegee Institute and later became the first Dean of Students at Howard University, shaping generations of future leaders.
Join us this month as we celebrate the life, talent, and enduring impact of William Hazel — an artist whose light continues to shine through history. 🖤
